Three restaurants fined after serving unsafe meals to allergy sufferers
Restaurants and fast food outlets in Swansea are being urged to play their part in protecting consumers with potentially fatal food allergies.
The call follows decisive action by Swansea Council's Trading Standards Team against three local restaurants—Saporito Pizza and Grill House, Indian Street Kitchen, and Joyato Sushi and Grill—after investigations uncovered serious breaches of food safety regulations, putting consumers at risk.
All three businesses have been fined after pleading guilty to offences under the General Food Regulations 2004 and the Food Safety Act 1990, including the offences of 'placing on the market unsafe food' and 'falsely describing food'.
The owner of Saporito Pizza and Grill House on Gower Road, Killay, Mr Seckin Bulutoglu, was fined £320 along with a £373 surcharge and £1,400 costs.
Indian Street Kitchen owner, Mr Muminul Uddin, was fined £933 with a £373 surcharge and £1,000 costs.
Yanrui Yi, owner of Joyato Sushi and Grill on Salubrious Passage was fined £4,000 with a Surcharge of £1,600 and costs of £3,866
The prosecutions followed undercover sampling and inspections, which revealed that all three establishments had supplied meals containing undeclared allergens to customers who had specifically declared allergies, as well as falsely describing food on their menus.
In each case, staff provided false assurances about the safety of the food, and subsequent analysis confirmed the presence of allergens such as gluten, milk, and egg. Further breaches included mislabelling of menu items, a lack of proper allergen management systems and staff training.
