Imported food controls

A significant proportion of our food is imported from third countries outside of the European Union and there are various import controls in place to ensure that such foods are safe.

Imports of products of animal origin are only permitted from third countries which have received the prior approval from the EU. These foods are subject to veterinary checks at the point of import into the EU and checks are carried out by EHOs and TSOs throughout the food distribution chain to ensure that they have been imported appropriately.

There are also a number of foods not of animal origin from third countries which are subject to enhanced import rules.

Failure to produce evidence of legitimate import for ingredients or other foods may result in their seizure by the authorities.

We are running a one day course which has been developed to assist food manufacturers and importers to recognise the correct rules of import and take the necessary steps to demonstrate the legality of their foods. For further details click here.
