Hefty fine for former food shop owner

The owner of a Middlesbrough food store has been hit with a hefty fine over breaches of food safety laws.

When Environmental Health Officers from Middlesbrough Council visited the Al-Makkah cash & carry on Linthorpe Road in August, 2024, for a routine inspection they found unhygienic conditions including mouse droppings on surfaces and floors.

Officers deemed there to be an immediate risk of injury to health, and the store was voluntarily closed with immediate effect.

Staff subsequently cleaned the premises which re-opened the following a few days later.

Appearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, owner Maqsood Subhani, of Marton Road, Middlesbrough, admitted three offences under the 2013 Food Safety & Hygiene Regulations.

His guilty pleas covered a lack of food safety management procedures, lack of adequate pest control and failure to keep the premises clean and in good repair.

The court was told Subhani – who no longer owns the business – had co-operated with Council food safety officers, and that pest control work had been undertaken.

Subhani was fined £1,333, with a victim surcharge of £533 and was ordered to pay £400 costs, making a total of £2,266.
