Environmental Health Officer/Technical Officer
Luton Council is expanding our environmental health team and is seeking two motivated and skilled Environmental Health Officers / Technical Officers to join our dynamic food and health and safety team as part of a structured progression scheme.
This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with significant experience or for someone looking to develop their career within environmental health while contributing to the safety and wellbeing of our community.
You will play a key role in delivering both reactive and planned workloads across food hygiene, food standards, and health & safety functions. Working with a wide range of stakeholders, you will help ensure compliance with legislation while supporting local businesses and communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a programme of inspections, investigations, and interventions relating to food hygiene, food standards, and/or health & safety.
- Provide professional advice and support to businesses, service users, and internal stakeholders in line with your competencies.
- Secure and improve compliance with relevant legislation through education, enforcement, and partnership working.
- Undertake detailed technical investigations, assess risks, and interpret legislation and statutory codes.
- Produce clear, concise inspection reports and documentation, and deliver presentations where required.
- Effectively manage and prioritise your workload to meet deadlines and performance targets.

About you
You will be a confident and capable professional with:
- Demonstrable experience of improving compliance with food safety and/or health & safety legislation.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to advise and influence a range of audiences clearly and authoritatively.
- The ability to carry out thorough investigations and apply technical knowledge in practical situations.
- Experience producing accurate reports and presenting complex information effectively.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- An understanding of equality and diversity issues and their impact within communities and workplaces.
- Up-to-date knowledge of environmental health legislation, current issues, and compliance strategies.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold a suitable qualification listed in the Food Law Code of Practice, such as EHRB Certificate of Registration to practice as an Environmental Health Officer or Higher Certificate in Food Control (or awaiting professional assessment pass).
Additional Requirements
- Ability to travel throughout the Borough daily to carry out inspections and investigations.
- Willingness to adopt agile working arrangements.
- Ability to transport equipment for site visits.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends (approximately up to 12 times per year).
