Food business prosecuted for putting public health at risk

A Bristol food company and their sole director have been fined following an inspection undertaken by Bristol City Council’s Public Protection Environmental Health team.

Margaret Akande, director of Twiggy Foods Ltd, who ran Haven Foods Cash and Carry Ever Ready House on Narroways Road in Bristol, was ordered to pay a fine of £28,000. The total fine included a contribution of £8,000 for prosecution costs. They pleaded guilty at Bristol Magistrates Court to 14 offences under Food Safety and Hygiene laws

The offences identified included dirty food premises, severe rat and mouse infestations, and contaminated food that had been gnawed by rodents, creating a serious risk to public health through food poisoning and the spread of disease.

The businesses provides fish, meat products and vegetables, specialising in West African and Nigerian foods for customers in Bristol and surrounding areas.

The case follows an initial inspection on 8 October 2024 when contaminated food and evidence of active mice and rat infestations was found throughout the premises.

Due to the imminent risk to human health, officers served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice. This closed the premises immediately and stopped all trading.

Officers provided help and advice to improve standards, and the store was allowed to reopen on 12 November 2024. However, conditions began to deteriorate again.

These failings led to ten Hygiene Improvement Notices being issued in February 2025, requiring the business to make significant improvements.

On 29 October 2025, officers carried out a further unannounced food hygiene inspection. Standards had once again fallen to unacceptable levels. The premises was found to be in a generally dirty condition and there was a rodent infestation with rat droppings clearly visible on the floor of a food storeroom.
