Company ordered to pay almost £9,000 for food safety offences in Barnsley

A company has been prosecuted for food safety offences at a convenience shop in Barnsley, being ordered to pay £8,951.26 in fines and costs.

VVS Trading Ltd, who operate Premier Kendray Convenience Store on Birk Avenue, Kendray, were prosecuted in Barnsley Magistrates Court on 10 July 2025.

The convenience store was visited by Barnsley Trading Standards team in May 2024, who found food being sold beyond its ‘use by’ date as well as food being sold without the name and address of a business in the UK and without meeting all UK food labelling requirements.

Despite formal Improvement Notices from the team, when officers returned to check compliance in November 2024 they found food still being sold beyond its ‘use by’ date, some by several days, as well as American candy with no contact details other than USA business.

VVS Trading Ltd pleaded guilty to a total of 15 charges, two around the failure to comply with Improvement Notices, and 13 around the sale of unsafe food items. They were ordered to pay a fine of £6,000, victim surcharge of £2,000, and costs of £951.26 - totalling £8,951.26.
